Leadership is a crucial concept when it comes to the health care setting. Leadership is a fundamental concept as it ensures that there is adequate direction of the behaviors of a person or a group to achieve a specific shared objective. Great leaders ensure that they inspire teams, enhance productivity, and assist their organizations to achieve their goals (Chatterjee, Suy, Yen, & Chhay, 2018). Throughout the past eight weeks in the course, I have enhanced my overall knowledge and understanding about the role of a nurse leader in the formulation and implementation of a clear vison. The vision should align with various competencies outlined by the American Organization for Nursing Leadership. Based on the competencies, I am in the process of creating my professional development plan in the position of a nurse leader. The course has played a crucial role and encouraged me to focus on competencies including communication and relationship management, knowledge of the health care environment, and professionalism (AONL, 2015).

The identified competencies are crucial for all stakeholders in the health care setting. A hospital and its health care professionals depend on their nurse leadership to guide them to establish and apply the identified competencies. The competencies are instrumental in the provision of patient-centered care. The competency of communication and relationship building makes it possible to create and encourage patient decisions (Health, Appan, & Gudigantala, 2017). Knowledge of the health care environment is partly concerned with adhering to professional association standards for nursing practice. The competency of professionalism enables me to learn more about ethics and application in the health care setting, advocacy through promotion of clinical views in making organizational decisions, promoting leader as well as staff engagement in professional organizations, and obtaining feedback about individual strengths and weaknesses (Alilyyani, Wong, & Cummings, 2018). The competencies rely on the aspect of being an effective leader in the health care context.

Effective leaders are fundamental in the execution of a firm’s vision. They also play a crucial role in how they improve and set the tone of an organization’s vision and future short-term and long-term goals. Leaders are concerned with the creation of plans that help to secure resources, enhance positive patient care outcomes. One major aspect to acknowledge is that even though there are multiple healthcare-related materials and courses, leadership skills and further understanding can be obtained from non-healthcare specialists. After completion of the program, the overall objective is to depict competencies and skills as a health care leader and ensure that the standards are applied appropriately in the health setting.

Having a degree in leadership and management is a crucial aspect as it creates more opportunities to succeed in the health care setting. It also makes it possible to apply different forms of standards and guidelines that depict professionalism when interacting with various stakeholders. In the current setting, I am able to collaborate with other individuals and guide other people to understand what should be done to offer patient-centered care. My future goal is to continue using leadership skills and competencies as a way of improving patient outcomes and outstanding levels of productivity and performance. I hope that I will continue engaging in further research related to leadership and management and collaborating with other people.
